Frequency Found: Stepping Into Professional Radio

Updated: 1 day ago

This week I'm armed with ambition, a notebook full of ideas and some killer outfits (hello glam squad!) - walking into my first real radio industry conference. A direct industry experience. It's like a professional Coachella. The kind where you know every handshake, every panel and every coffee break has the potential to shift your trajectory. I have never been more ready.

Finding My Way Without Losing Myself

Figuring out your path in school and your career at the same time is like producing a live show with a glitchy mic: stressful, unpredictable and just a little chaotic. Between being a mom who's battled non-stop sicknesses all year long and working part time with full time studies - what I’ve learned is this: you don’t find your way by following someone else’s script. You don't apologize for your priorities and you step in to find your groove. I have always said experience will teach you more than any book and this is why I am thankful for every single step that brought me here (the good and the bad).

You find your way by turning up your own volume, getting out there, staying focused and filling yourself with confidence - even if your voice cracks a little at first. Even crazier? When your kids start to witness the change and confidence in you - you realize how proud they are to have you as their mom. Those are the moments to live for and the reason to keep going.

School Is My Pre-Show, Not the Headliner

If you've tuned into our student shows, you can see how far we've come since the start of September. It's really something unexplainable when you can look back at your first broadcast to see how much you've learned and accomplished in just the short period of 8 months.

I used to think school was the main event, the key to unlocking all the doors - and while this is true, I know it’s just the warm-up. Learning the equipment, how to operate/execute the systems, learning alongside passionate individuals is a great start - but the real magic happens when you begin applying what you learn in the real rooms, with real people who speak the language of your dreams. This big industry conference coming up? It is the perfect crossover where education meets elevation.

Opportunities Are Responding to Your Energy

You ever notice how when you're clear about your goals, suddenly the right mentors, invites and chances start showing up? That’s not coincidence (that's universal direction). That’s you syncing up with your own frequency - honour it. Once you’re broadcasting on the right wavelength, people start tuning in.

Flipping the Script to Industry Baby

This week, I’m stepping into something huge. On top of everything happening at this conference, I’ve been given the absolute honour of a 1:1 mentorship session with Alan Cross - the very voice that has shaped so much of my music knowledge just by tuning in over the years! This week I get to walk into one of the top radio stations in Toronto.

Front row access to watch our nation's talent receive their flowers and awards. With people like Jessie Reyez, Matty Matheson and Dallas Green - all who have single-handedly helped our communities grow into something so beautiful. I am continuously grateful to witness little snippets of history. Talk about full-circle. The ripple effect of radio is real.

It's crazy to take a moment and realize that I let myself in here. I have invested, put in the time, the studying, the money and the self-work. Given this opportunity and being sponsored with a pass to attend event of the year, surrounded by the pros in every aspect of media? Just confirmed exactly what I already knew about myself - I’m not pretending to belong in this industry. I am the next wave.  This is my first real-deal conference with the talent and decision-makers who have been the faces/voices of this industry for years. It’s the kind of room I’ve dreamed of being in since the moment I hit record for the first time.

Nervous? Excited? Prepared? Absolutely.

Power Moves & Playlists On Point

I’m not walking in to prove anything. I’m walking in to absorb, connect and show up as myself. The version of me who knows her stuff and isn’t afraid to learn more (knowledge is power). My outfits are ready, my questions are prepped, and yes - a confidence-boosting playlist that hits just as hard as my ambition is a necessity. You are what you consume.

What I’m Manifesting This Week

  • Conversations that open doors

  • Mentors who see my spark and passion

  • The courage to speak with confidence

  • The wisdom to listen deeply

  • A moment that reminds me I belong here

Because This Isn’t Just a Conference, It’s a Frequency Check

This week is about more than just networking. It’s a vibe check between myself and the industry I’ve chosen. It’s my chance to line up with everything I’ve been preparing for and remind myself: you’re not waiting to be discovered - you’re simply stepping into alignment.

I’m not just going to the conference. I’m arriving.

& I’m Just Getting Started

This event is my debut, not my finale - and if there’s one thing I can take away from these past 8 months, it’s that the universe isn’t holding back opportunities. You just have to match its frequency and speak into the mic (or your life) with intention.

So here I am. On the rise, totally tuned in - and future ready.

xo,

Rae
